Previously, companies such as Sony, JVC and Kodak, etc. used analog video tapes. Since 1990 the digital tape came into use and three years hence, the storage tapes were being replaced by optical disks, hard disk drives and solid state memory. Camcorders, which do not use magnetic tapes, are called `tape-less` while those using two different media, like HDD and Memory card, are called `Hybrid Camcorders`.

Technological advancement has miniaturized the large cameras on specially mounted trolleys to portable video cameras and recorders for broadcasting images. This transition started in 1982 when JVC and Sony released the first professional camcorders. The Betacam, designed by Sony, slowly gained popularity and became the standard device for both weddings, news gathering and video editing. This was followed by Betamax in 1983 – the first consumer camcorder. At this stage, they were bulky and generally rested on the user`s shoulder during recording. Even today most camcorders are designed for right-hand users with very few possessing ambidextrous ergonomics.

Both JVC and Sony started improving the quality of camcorders which led to the development of digital devices in 1990. These had cassettes even smaller than the 8mm media allowing further reduction of size of tape transport assembly. The digital variety further improved the audio and video quality over the best analog camcorders. With the advent of digital models, the market has grown substantially being facilitated further by its price and size reduction. Today a device fits in the palm and is sold at a retail price of less than $150.

Camcorders comprise of three basic components : lens, imager and recorder. The lens solely focuses and gathers light on the imager. The imager is the eye of the camcorder which converts captured images into electrical video signals. The recorder encodes the video signals into storable form. The lens offers professional control of all major optical functions such as aperture, shutter speed and focus, etc. The recorder function is responsible for writing the video signal onto a recording medium (magnetic video tape).

Camcorders are normally classified by their storage device. The highest quality digital format such as Betacam and Mini DV, etc., suffer from little generation loss during recording, dubbing and editing. In analog recordings, noise and bandwidth issues relating to cables, amplifiers and mixers are a problem while in digital connections such problems are minimized.

However archival problems continue to affect both analog and the digital varieties. They are both prone to tape format deterioration over time. This is more acute in the digital recordings where large data base is permanently erased owing to deterioration and restoration is very expensive. One of the advantages in analog devices is that the recording may be usable even after the media, in which the data is stored, suffers deterioration.

Consumer camcorders emphasize the basic qualities such as easy usage, price and portability rather than technical performances. Such units offer a wide range of I/O operation but lack various menu settings, video exposures, gain controls and sound level management. For beginners, basic recording and playback facilities are emphasized. Today a personal computer, with a modest configuration, can perform digital video editing with software available in the market.

Camcorders have a plethora of usage in electronic media ranging from electronic news organizations to TV / current affair production. They are invaluable for initial video footage in locations away from the distribution infrastructure. Events which have scheduled set timings, such as official press conferences, use camcorders extensively. They are also used for covering personal events such as weddings, birthdays and other special family gatherings.

Even in the political arena, camcorder is used to film events which have a bearing on the subject. Protesters from various fields, such as animal rights, tax, anti-globalization, war and police, use camcorders to record and film such events which have wide social and historical ramifications. Even some judicial decisions are based on video footages exposed by such devices. They are also used in weddings, low budget films, ad shoots, tv shows and for academic film making, etc.

Good Overall Player But Users with Kids Take Note…

I ended up buying this player specifically because it had divx / mp4 compatibility which I wanted since I mostly use digital video files rather than dvd disks.

The main downside I have found with this player is that when my daughter uses it in the car she constantly accidentally hits the control buttons which stop or skip the video forward. Because of the placement of the buttons it is VERY easy for kids to accidentally hit a button.

We just got back from a road trip and this was a major pain. To add to that when you are playing video files (divx/mp4) from a DVD disk there is no chapters so when you press the skip it jumps to the next movie and there is no way to go back to where you were. One one 2 hour period my daughter probably watched parts of 6 movies because of this. I did discover that you can fast forward by pressing and holding the skip button, but it’s still a time consuming affair.

I now have to figure out some type of “button protector” to prevent this for future trips.

If you don’t need divx/mp4 functionality I would suggest going with another player like one of the sony dvd players which has higher quality video and might not have this same button issue.

Bought this for my son in law who is a commercial wedding photographer. Their wedding trips take them away from home up to a week at a time and the only thing to keep you sane during the down time is a book and the occasional TV show but you are at the mercy of who has the remote.

Another guy on the boat had a portable DVD player and my son in law mentioned it to my daughter.  After doing thorough research I found this DVD player. For the $$$$ it is the best bang for your buck. The battery life is hands down 10x better than 90% of what is out there. He loves it!!!!  I also purchased the travel bag for it.
You would have thought I had bought a kid a new video game!!  My daughter called Christmas night after everyone left to thank me for making her a DVD widow. She was only kidding but she said he hadn’t stopped talking about it or fiddling about it all day.

Great portable dvd player for long trips

Purchased this dvd player to use for entertainment during a 6 hour flight. The battery had no problem lasting for the entire flight. Used 2 ear buds between us. Was awesome to play movies I converted to .avi files. I burned several movies onto a single DVD and the player had no problem playing them. They even show up in the menu. Nice…

Only have 2 minor issues. Would be nice to have a fast forward button on the player itself since my .avi files didn’t have chapters. The other is the display quality. I didn’t expect to get the 800×600 resolution that Sony uses. The trade-off is that you get the long battery life on this Panasonic. I’m happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone that needs a long playing DVD player.

Took trip to Hawaii from Reno and it lasted the who way including layover time 8 hours. Used it in the hotel room. Used it ont the return trip too! Don’t know how to live without it on the plane with my kids. It should be a mandatory item for all parents who board airplanes with young kids.

Anyone have this problem with Polaroid Digital Camera?

I have a Polaroid i531 digital camera. Lately I have noticed that once I power off my camera, I am no longer able to view pictures that I had taken.Instead, I get a black screen that says “no image.” I’ve made sure my memory card is placed securely in it’s place. When I place the memory card into my computer, I am able to view the pictures, but not from the camera itself. Any ideas?

The problem is Cobalt Chloride has been proven to cause cancer, leave it up to scientists to make a safe product hazardous, and the British Chemical Regulations have required that this Blue Indicating Silica Gel be labeled and disposed of as hazardous material. So if you come across this Blue Indicating Silica Gel in the US simply dispose of immediately. The Desiccant Industry has responded by developing a new Indicating Gel that is just taking market here in the US. More on this new product in a future article.

The great thing about wearing such a beautiful wedding dress is that is really does make a statement in the pictures, whether it be the group or romantic / intimate shots, there is nothing better than see in the dress in it full glory. If you have a JVC camcorder like me, you may try hard to import JVC MOD camcorder files to Wedding Movie Maker, only finding that MOD file is not supported by Wedding Movie Maker.
